Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to Children’s Health Services Research (CHSR) at Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM). CHSR is the research arm of General and Community Pediatrics within the IUSM Department of Pediatrics. Our team focuses on today’s diverse issues affecting children, health care and health care providers. When CHSR was established in 2001, we set our goals to focus on becoming the nation’s preeminent center for children’s health services research and informatics, and we strive for excellence in research, education, and service. CHSR is now one of the largest and most active pediatric divisions of its kind in the country. We are nationally and internationally recognized for our leading edge research and contributions to policy decisions surrounding children and health care issues.

We have a talented group of investigators and support staff who collectively have more than $4 million in external funding. Our team has expertise in health informatics, health services research, epidemiology, and health policy analysis, including decision analysis and cost effectiveness research. We have been nationally recognized for several exciting programs such as the CHICA system, a computer based decision support system and electronic medical record for primary care pediatrics that has been shown to improve care of conditions as diverse as maternal depression, asthma, and parental smoking cessation.

CHSR also partners with the Regenstrief Institute, one of the largest and most productive pediatric informatics research groups in the country. The Regenstrief Institute is the nation’s foremost institute for the development of state, regional and non-geographic health information exchanges to enable access to clinical care information at all levels of public health for the purposes of improved public health situational awareness and case reporting.

CHSR also runs PResNet, a pediatric practice-based research network, incorporating over 30 community health centers, private pediatric practices and community based organizations across Indianapolis, boasting a 77% recruitment rate.

Our investigators are involved in diverse projects ranging from establishment of a national Medical Home Model for the state of Indiana to HIV/Aids research in Sub-Saharan Africa. We work in a collegial atmosphere with offices on the downtown canal in Indianapolis.

CHSR is a family oriented group of professionals who love their work, enjoy their working environment and feel pride in the role they take in improving health care for children and their families.

Thank you for visiting our website to find out more about CHSR.

Sincerely,

Stephen M. Downs, MD, MS
