Evaluations

Every student is interested in how they are performing, one way we measure this is through evaluations. Our department uses the online evaluation system - Evalue (www.e-value.net/) at the conclusion of both, inpatient and outpatient, rotations as well as a written midpoint evaluation during the inpatient rotation.

Students should carefully note who they are evaluating on E-Value, because these same people are evaluating you. So, if you worked with someone closely and did not receive an evaluation for them, please contact the clerkship coordinator so they can be added.

Inpatient Pediatric Rotation

Each member of the student's team (faculty, fellow, resident) will receive an inpatient evaluation form for the student(s) on their team. Obviously, a student interacts with each of these individuals in a different way, so evaluations may slightly vary. If a team member only works with the student(s) for a couple of days, they may simply mark "suspend" on the form indicating that they did not have adequate time to properly grade the student(s) performance.

Outpatient Pediatric Rotation

A similar evaluation is used for the outpatient setting. The evaluators will be any pediatrician (not fellows or residents) that the student is assigned to, including private physicians. Due to scheduling, most students will have more than one evaluator. The faculty precepting students during normal newborn will have a shortened version of the outpatient evaluation.

In addition to outpatient preceptor evaluations on EValue, each member of the general pediatric faculty on campus receives a pictorial roster of students. This provides them the opportunity to add comments to any student's file (e.g. you may work several times with a pediatrician in urgent care clinic or during evening call, and that pediatrician wishes to add comments to your file).

Significant positive or negative comments may lead to a modification of the final course grade.

Evaluation Process

Each student should take the initiative to ask the individuals they work with for feedback during their rotations. When on the inpatient service, a midpoint evaluation form must be completed and turned in, by the student, to the Pediatric Education Office (due date is on the inpatient lecture calendar). It is the student's responsibility to see that this is completed.
