Wishard Hospital is one of the leading providers of health care in the city of Indianapolis with special emphasis on the vulnerable populations of Marion County in Indiana. It is one of the five largest safety-net health care systems in the country, and the state's largest provider of indigent primary care, specialty care, mental health services and low-cost pharmaceuticals.

IU School of Medicine neonatologists on staff at Riley Hospital for Children provide care to newborns in the Wishard Level 3 NICU. On November 3, 2009, voters approved a referendum to build a new Wishard Memorial Hospital. The new facility will be 1.2 million sq/ft on a 37 acre site at the west end of the IUPUI campus, approximately ¾ mile from the location of the current hospital, and is designed to have 36 single patient NICU rooms.
