Morning Session:
Overview of Indiana's Article 7 - What you need to know now, and where to find it!
Presenters: Rylin Rodgers, Riley Child Development Center and Kylee Bassett Hope, Special Education Coordinator, Office of Charter Schools, Ball State University
An overview of key components of Indiana's implementation of IDEA. Participants will leave with a working knowledge of Article 7 and how to locate key information.

Advocacy is Not a Dirty Word: How to Calmly and Successfully Advocate for Your Child
Presenter: Jennifer Meadows, Riley Child Development Center
What are your advocacy and communication styles? In this session, we will take a look at different types of advocacy and communication styles and do a brief self-assessment. This session will then provide tips and strategies for enhancing a family's advocacy and communication skills when working with school, medical and human service personnel.

What Else is There?
Presenter: Jennifer Akers, Family Voices Indiana
Families and the professionals that serve them often struggle with the variety of public and private programs available. This training will provide an overview of the major health and support resource programs available to families. Join us and learn:
  • What programs are available?
  • Eligibility criteria for each program
  • Application process for each program
  • Where to learn more about each program

Post-Secondary Transition - T-IEP, services and goal development for transition:
Presenter: Megan Carter
Planning for life after high school is a scary thought for parents with a child who may require extra assistance. A proactive and team approach is crucial to assist in the transition from a school system to what life will look like after high school. Ensuring that all areas of a student's future are thoughtfully considered and planned for will be the key to a smooth transition.

Accommodations, Adaptations, Modifications and Assistive Technology: What Are They and How Do We Get Them?
Presenter: Jennifer Meadows
This session will provide information on where accommodations, adaptations, modifications, assistive technology and supplementary aid, supports and services are covered under Article 7. Examples will be provided along with strategies for including appropriate supports on the IEP.

Alternatives to Public School
Presenter: Traci Kurmay
This session will provide information about homeschooling a child with special needs. We will discuss requirements, procedures and laws around homeschooling in Indiana.

Understanding Discipline
Presenter: Kylee Bassett
This session will look at discipline rules as set forth in Indiana Code and Indiana's Special Education Rules and Regulations (Article 7). During the session you will have the opportunity to learn more about manifestation determination, interim alternative educational setting, disciplinary change of placement, functional behavioral assessments and behavioral intervention plans, and expulsion procedures. In addition, there will be time for discussion and an opportunity to ask questions.

Medical Home and School
Presenters: Mary Jo Paladino and Angela Paxton, Medical Home Learning Collaborative
Working with schools - effective communications between the school and the physician's office (primary care medical home) while being HIPAA and FERPA compliant. Communication between the school, the family and doctor's office for students with chronic conditions and special health care needs.
