Dear Colleague:

The Child Protection Program mission is to improve the care, evaluation and coordination of services to children who are suspected victims of child abuse or neglect. To accomplish this mission our team of child abuse pediatricians, pediatric nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers and support staff are committed to:

  1. Providing state of the art, comprehensive and coordinated medical evaluation and care of alleged child abuse victims
  2. Offering professional education and consultation to community professionals
  3. Contributing new knowledge in the area of child abuse and family violence through research efforts

Our team is extremely proud of our role in the statewide collaborative effort with medical providers, child protection services, law enforcement officers, attorneys, judges and community partners. We actively serve on numerous community and state committees addressing child maltreatment issues such as the Marion County Child Fatality Review Team, Indiana State Child Fatality Review Team, Marion County Child Protection Team, Indiana Children’s Justice Act Task Force and others. We also serve as the medical provider for several child advocacy centers in Central Indiana.

One of the most rewarding issues in child abuse pediatrics work is finding the balance, working to ensure that every child gets an appropriate evaluation and making sure the evaluation for injuries is complete, reasonable medical conditions are evaluated and accidental mechanisms of injury are considered. Over the past five years our program has now expanded to include four board certified child abuse pediatricians (yes, it is a board certified subspecialty!) and a nurse practitioner; the volume of consultations has increased from just over 1,400 consultations per year to 4,000 consultations and growing. We are reaching more and more areas throughout the state.
