The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology at Riley Hospital for Children combines comprehensive care of youth with endocrine conditions; premier basic, clinical and translational research; and top-notch subspecialty training for the next generation of academic pediatric endocrinologists. We are thrilled to share some of the unique assets of our Section and hope that you will be compelled to come and appraise all that we have to offer for yourselves!
The first cornerstone of our mission is the provision of compassionate, timely and expert clinical care to children and adolescents throughout Indiana. To that end we offer outpatient diabetes and endocrine clinic appointments at Riley, IU Health North (Meridian Crossing), and St. Francis Hospital on the Southside, as well as in South Bend, IN and Evansville, IN. Our pediatric diabetes team is led by 11 childhood diabetes specialists and supported by specialized nurses, nutritionists and social workers. We care for over 2200 children with diabetes throughout the State. We focus on individual management plans that optimize glycemic control and reduce the risk of long-term complications. Our insulin pump program is the only one in Indiana and serves approximately 850 children on insulin pump therapy. In addition to diabetes, we treat thousands of children with both common and extraordinarily rare endocrine problems. These include, but are not limited to, abnormalities of growth & puberty, disorders of sex development, thyroid, adrenal, pituitary & bone conditions, and syndromes with endocrine manifestations. In collaboration with the Division of Adolescent Medicine we have also launched a Diabetes Prevention Clinic that delivers targeted interventions to at-risk adolescents with obesity and pre-diabetes. As testament to the quality of the services that we offer, our Section consistently ranks among the top 50 Children’s Hospitals in the country in US News and World Report.
This is an incredibly exciting era in the realm of scientific research within our Division. Spearheaded by a cadre of outstanding internationally renowned NIH-funded investigators, our program in diabetes research truly encompasses the “bench to bedside” approach. In addition to our own highly productive on-site laboratories and Pediatric Clinical Research Center, we participate in National Research Consortia, Registries, and Networks aimed at the prevention and/or early intervention of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes in children. Not only are we at the forefront of ground-breaking scientific discoveries, we are uniquely positioned to take advantage of emerging innovative treatments. Collectively, these efforts are expected to translate into tangible benefits for our patients with diabetes in the very near future! Beyond diabetes, our faculty are engaged in a broad assortment of research endeavors aimed at advancing knowledge and improving the clinical care of children with endocrine conditions such as growth hormone deficiency, precocious puberty, Turner syndrome, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, osteogenesis imperfecta and congenital hypothyroidism.
Our fully accredited fellowship program has a formidable track-record of training exceedingly accomplished clinician-scientists. In addition to pediatric fellows, our program has trained more med-peds endocrinologists than any other institution in the country! One of the greatest strengths of our program is our prestigious faculty, who routinely hold leadership positions in national scientific organizations, sit on Editorial Boards, are recipients of Teaching Awards and enjoy international stature in their areas of expertise. Thus, these talented individuals serve as exceptional role models and provide unparalleled mentorship to our trainees.
In summary, the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology is a flourishing and vibrant enterprise. We are gratified by our successes and committed to attaining even greater heights as we strive for excellence in everything we do! We would be honored to welcome you as our guest. Please feel free to contact me if I can provide any additional information.
