Stephen M. Downs, MD, MS Vice Chair of General Pediatrics
Director, Children’s Health Services Research
Dr. Downs received his MD and Master's Degree in Medical Informatics from Stanford University. He completed an internship and residency in Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill and stayed at UNC to complete a health services research fellowship in the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program.
Dr. Downs was on faculty in the Division of Community Pediatrics at UNC for 10 years where he held joint appointments in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the School of Public Health. He was the Director of the Duke-UNC Training Program in Medical Informatics, and served as a technical consultant for the American Academy of Pediatrics in the development of evidence-based practice parameters. His research interests include computer-based decision effectiveness analysis and their application to guideline development and computer based decision support for clinicians.
Dorota Szczepaniak, MD, FAAP (pronounced: she-pa-nyak) Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics
Section Chief of General and Community Pediatrics
Dr. Szczepaniak completed her medical school in Poland, than engaged in bench research on cell adhesion molecules at UNC Chapel Hill. Subsequently she finished her pediatric residency at UNC and moved to Indiana, where she practiced general pediatrics for 10 years in rural setting. Her practice received multiple service excellence awards from the Indiana State Department of Health. In 2008 Dr. Szczepaniak joined academic ranks of general pediatric faculty at IUSM. She teaches residents in continuity clinic, leads pediatric diagnostic clinic and participates in behavioral clinic. Her particular interests focus on behavioral pediatrics, managing common behavioral problems in the general office setting and improving pediatric education in the area of behavioral pediatrics.
Thomas Klausmeier, MD Chief of Pediatrics
Dr Klausmeier attended medical school and residency at IU School of Medicine. After completing his residency he joined the General and Community Pediatric Section as faculty. He divides his time between general pediatric practice and pediatric rheumatology. Dr. Klausmeier also spent several years staffing an adolescent clinic twice weekly and continues to staff a weekly continuity clinic. He has been the recipient of several teaching awards. His interests include pediatric rheumatologic disease, care of the underserved and pediatric education.
Our Team – Faculty
Our dedicated team of General Pediatricians consists of over 120 physicians. All of our physicians are involved in the clinical practice of general pediatrics and the education of medical students, residents and allied medical professionals.
Our faculty provides outpatient and inpatient services throughout the greater Indianapolis area and are actively involved in quality improvement projects, pediatric research in outpatient settings, and a variety of learning collaboratives. We have quarterly Section meetings and our own General Pediatric CME initiatives.
