Pediatric Critical Care Research

The section of Pediatric Critical care is involved in several multi-center studies with a national presence that focus on such topics as the age of blood at transfusion, sepsis and shock, and stem cell and respiratory failure in association with the Pediatric Acute Lung Injury and Sepsis Investigators. Additional studies are looking at the costs and impacts of healthcare cost and utilization to improve patient care and outcomes.  The Cardiovascular ICU is also involved in multi-center studies through the Society of Thoracic Surgery Registry focusing on issues such as tracheostomy after cardiac surgery, extubation failure after neonatal cardiac surgery, and the evaluation of neonatal respiratory failure among sites in the Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Consortium.  In addition to these primary investigator driven studies, each of our pediatric critical care fellows are also required to complete a research project during their three year course of study with us.
