Clinical Services

Pulmonology/Allergy/ Sleep Medicine Clinical Services

The pediatric pulmonologists, allergists and sleep boarded pediatricians at Riley Hospital for Children, Indiana University Medical Center provide diagnosis and treatment of infants, children and adolescents with acute and chronic respiratory, allergic and sleep disorders. In addition to caring for patients throughout the Midwest, we are actively performing research to better understand how to identify and prevent serious lung damage in children with respiratory, allergic and sleep disease.

The Latest Technologies for Diagnosis

The Pulmonary Diagnostic Center provides specialized lung function testing for children through the Pediatric Pulmonary Function Laboratory. These specialized laboratories perform testing for physicians throughout Indiana and are one of only a few places in the country to offer pulmonary function testing for infants through adulthood.

The Riley Hospital Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) lab, is staffed by a team of 7 respiratory therapists specially trained in performing pulmonary function testing in children.  The Riley PFT staff has particular expertise in performing preschool spirometry, and can obtain interpretable spirometry in children as young as 3 years old.

The Riley Hospital PFT lab offers the following:

  • Spirometry (with or without bronchodilator)
  • Exhaled Nitric Oxide (eNO)
  • Bronchial provocation (methacholine)
  • Bronchial provocation (mannitol)
  • Exercise challenge
  • Exercise bronchoscopy
  • Plethysmography
  • Lung volumes
  • Diffusion capacity

For decades, Riley Hospital has been home to an infant pulmonary function laboratory that is unsurpassed in experience and expertise. Through this state of the art laboratory, much of the pulmonary function testing performed in preschool and school aged children can also be achieved in sedated infants. Our state of the art Preschool Testing Laboratory is the only lab of its type in the state.

Our metabolic and exercise testing laboratory, which is also available to physicians throughout Indiana, is used to help evaluate the cause of a child's breathing problems.

Other diagnostic methods include fiberoptic bronchscopy services.    Bronchscopies are performed in the Outpatient Operating Room or for Inpatients at Riley Hospital.  We are excited for the inauguration of our Aerodigestive Center, a multi-specialty program.
