Bio

Specialty

Pediatric Rheumatology

Areas of Interest

Dr. O'Neil specializes in diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic diseases of childhood, including systemic lupus erythematosus, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, juvenile inflammatory myositis, localized and systemic scleroderma, mixed connective tissue disease, vasculitis and autoinflammatory disorders of systemic inflammation.

Bio

Dr. O'Neil is the Director of Pediatric Rheumatology, and the Program Director of the Pediatric Rheumatology Fellowship at IUPUI and at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health.  She joined the faculty at the School of Medicine in 2012 from the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine.  She grew up in Maine, and was educated in Boston, New Haven, CT and Baltimore.  Her clinical interests include all pediatric rheumatic conditions, especially severe multisystem inflammatory disorders.  She coordinates a multi-center collaborative research project studying the effects of hormone changes during puberty on inflammatory disease activity and autoimmunity in children with systemic lupus erythematosus.  Her research strives to understand why autoimmune diseases are more common in females, and why many begin or worsen around the time of puberty.  She is active in multi-center clinical trials of novel medications in childhood inflammatory diseases and is a leader in national and international research organizations.

Research & Grants

Dr. O'Neil participates in several multi-center clinical trials of drugs to treat children with arthritis and other rheumatic diseases, in clinical registries and repositories that aim to help understand the diseases themselves and how they work, and in basic and translational studies that investigate the science of how diseases happen and search for biomarkers of disease activity or improvement.  Her major research effort is coordinating a multicenter longitudinal observational study of children with early onset systemic lupus erythematosus as they near and progress through puberty to understand the effects of hormones on lupus, and to understand the female sex predilection of lupus and related autoimmune diseases.  This study gathers data and samples of blood and urine from children every 3 months from late pre-puberty through completion of sexual maturation to identify hormones whose production and activity leads to increases in disease activity, and a more autoimmune phenotype.  In addition, she collaborates with fellow pediatric rheumatologists and researchers in CARRA, the Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance, to collectively study uncommon or rare rheumatic diseases of childhood.  Her collaborative work has helped advance the understanding and care of children with lupus, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, systemic vasculitis of childhood, localized scleroderma, juvenile dermatomyositis, and very rare genetic disorders of the control of inflammation, the autoinflammatory diseases.
